PICC catheter with Kitelock™ solution
Description
This dataset comprises biochemical and hematological laboratory values collected from critically ill patients to evaluate the effect of Kitelock catheter lock solution on laboratory markers. The aim of this study is to determine the volume of blood that needs to be drawn before laboratory analyses are no longer influenced by residual Kitelock solution. The dataset supports research on identifying potential interference in laboratory values and establishing guidelines for accurate blood sampling after catheter locking. Research Hypothesis: This study hypothesizes that residual Kitelock catheter lock solution can influence specific biochemical and hematological laboratory markers. By determining the volume of blood that needs to be discarded before accurate lab analyses can be performed, the study aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for blood sampling in clinical practice. By analyzing these markers, the study aims to determine the extent to which residual EDTA affects laboratory results and establish guidelines for appropriate blood sampling volumes.

Steps to reproduce
For this study, we selected 10 patients with peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) catheters. The dead space of the catheter was approximately 1 ml and we used Kitelock solution as a locking solution for catheters. Blood samples were drawn using a closed vacuum system with three types of Vacuette (Greiner Bio-One) blood collection tubes: • K3EDTA tube: 2 ml lavender tube without separator gel, commonly used for complete blood count (CBC). • Sodium citrate tube: 2 ml blue tube without separator gel, used for coagulation studies (containing 0.109 M sodium citrate, equivalent to 3.2% w/v). • Lithium heparin tube: 2.5 ml green tube with separator gel, used for routine biochemical examinations in our hospital. Blood Draw Protocol: 1. Discard 1 ml of blood using a syringe. 2. Draw five tubes of one type (either K3EDTA, sodium citrate, or lithium heparin). The total sum of blood volumes for the tubes were as follows: o Tube 1: 3 ml (1 ml + 2 ml) o Tube 2: 5 ml o Tube 3: 7 ml o Tube 4: 9 ml o Tube 5: Used as a reference to compare results from the previous tubes. 3. Perform laboratory analyses to measure: o Basic clinical biochemistry using the Roche c702 analyzer (Roche Diagnostics, Basel, Switzerland). o Complete blood count (CBC) using the Beckman Coulter UniCell DxH 900 analyzer (Beckman Coulter, Brea, USA). o Coagulation studies using the Werfen ACL Top 750 CTS analyzer (Werfen, Bedford, USA). Results from the tubes were compared pairwise to evaluate the impact of preanalytical conditions.
