Lifestyle and metabolic profiles in young and middle-aged adults

Description

The metabolic state encompasses the body’s processes of storing and expending biochemical energy and their subsequent effects on biometric indicators and non‑communicable diseases (NCDs). It is closely linked to lifestyle factors such as sleep, nutrition, physical activity, and recreational habits, all of which influence overall health and functional capacity. The rising global prevalence of metabolic syndrome underscores concerns regarding quality of life, disability, and longevity, particularly as metabolic dysregulation increasingly emerges early in adulthood. Evidence suggests that obesity—followed by hypertension and type 2 diabetes—will become leading contributors to disability, highlighting the importance of characterizing lifestyle patterns associated with metabolic risk in young adults. This dataset includes information from 45 adults across eight domains: general data, biometric indicators, physical activity, feeding patterns, substance use, screen time, sleep quality, and reading habits. These data provide insight into modifiable lifestyle factors relevant to metabolic health and potential areas for intervention. Overall, the sample exhibited generally healthy conditions; however, elevated triglyceride levels and increased body mass index (with 60% classified as overweight or obese) were the primary biometric deviations. Approximately half of the participants reported good sleep quality and adequate physical activity, along with balanced eating and reading habits.

Steps to reproduce

Forty-five young and middle-aged adults were admitted to the university's Research Institute facilities. The height was measured with a calibrated stadiometer, body circumferences were taken with a fiberglass measuring tape, blood pressure was measured with an electronic blood pressure monitor, weight and body composition were acquired through a bioimpedance scale, and blood parameters were measured through capillary blood testing. The lifestyle questionnaire was self-administered through an academic platfofm (Microsoft Form, from Microsft Teams). The sections were set as follows: 1. General data (six questions), 2. Sleep quality (five questions extracted from the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI)), 3. Screen time (seventeen questions), 4. Feeding patterns (ten items), 5. Substance use (seven items), 6. Reading habits (five items), 7. Physical activity (six questions from The Global Physical Activity Questionnaire, WHO). At the end of each session for data collection, the drink and food sustenance was provided for breakfast, alongside an individual written report for their metabolic status, and professional recommendations for improving the overall health were facilitated. The instrument is in both languages English and Spanish (<<Form_ Sociodemographic_lifestyle >>, <<Formulario_Datos sociodemográficos_Estilo de vida >>). The form structure included seven sections, stated as follows: 1. General data that includes seven questions devoted to personal identification and sociodemographic data; 2. Sleep quality, with five items extracted from the PSQI; 3. Screen time and internet browsing, with five items; 4. Feeding patterns are shown as “Diet and nutrition” in the form, it contains ten items; 5. Substance use is referred as “Drug use” in the formulary, and explore the use of alcohol, tobacco and other substances via six items; 6. Reading habits section that expanded five questions for general diagnosis of reading routine; and 7. Physical activity section, with five questions from The Global Physical Activity Questionnaire. The raw data are presented through three .csv files, which include the total of data (<<Numerical_data>>, numerical variables and numerical categories), and an extended version of data including text information in both, original Spanish and English languages (<<General_data_Spanish>>, << General_data_English >>). The anthropometric and metabolic measurements are contained in all the three previous data files as a “Biometric_indicator” section, according to the codebook <<Codebook_Lifestyle_Adulthood>>. The codebook is presented in PDF file format, named as << Codebook_Lifestyle_Adulthood >>; it depicts the ID number for the items (77), the names for the eight previous mentioned sections, the column names for the 77 items, and the “Values” that contains the meaning, description and number coding for categorical variables.
