The Mode-I fracture toughness of heated rock governs whether fractures can be created, steered or contained in geothermal stimulation, deep excavation, tunnelling and radioactive-waste isolation, yet its temperature dependence is commonly modelled as if a single relationship held for all rock types. Our manuscript tests that assumption directly. We pair new semi-circular bend experiments on four lithologies subjected to prolonged thermal conditioning with a compiled database of 1072 in-house and published measurements across 15 lithologies, evaluate five regression algorithms at five levels of lithological aggregation, and interpret every model with SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP).
