Data for: Environmental Controls on Amino Acid Binding Affinities to Smectite and Serpentine Clays in Prebiotic Systems
Description
This dataset contains experimental data supporting the study "Environmental Controls on Amino Acid Binding Affinities to Smectite and Serpentine Clays in Prebiotic Systems." The manuscript will be submitted to Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta. The study investigated the adsorption of four amino acids with different chemical properties (L-arginine, glycine, L-threonine, and L-glutamic acid) to clays (montmorillonite, nontronite, saponite, and lizardite) and altered rocks (diabase and dunite) under varying fluid conditions, in order to infer selectivity trends to smectites and serpentines on the early Earth. Lab experiments reacted suspensions of the clay minerals and altered rocks with various amounts of each amino acid at pH 5, 7, and 10 in 10 mmol/L NaCl. Experimental data include: - The Adsorption_Data folder contains .csv files on amino acid concentrations from uptake experiments determined via high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the associated Langmuir isotherms fitted to the adsorption data. - The Attenuated_Total_Reflectance_Fourier_Transform_Infrared_Spectroscopy folder contains a .csv file for the ATR-FTIR spectra of lizardite. - The Inductively_Coupled_Plasma_Optical_Emission_Spectroscopy folder contains a .csv file for the concentrations of cations (Al, Si, Mg, Ca, Fe, and K) in the mineral/rock suspensions measured by ICP-OES. - The Langmuir_Constants folder contains .csv files for the Langmuir constants calculated from a least squares regression in MATLAB using the experimental data. - The Powder_X-Ray_Diffraction_Patterns folder contains .csv files for the XRD patterns of the single-phase clays (montmorillonite, nontronite, saponite, and lizardite) and altered rocks (diabase and dunite). - The Speciation_Diagrams folder contains .csv files for the speciation diagrams of arginine, glutamic acid, glycine, and threonine as a function of pH. The associated text files include additional information for interpreting the data.
