Data from 591 randomly selected smallholder maize farm households were collected using a face-to-face survey method. The study area comprised seven sub-counties of Bungoma County in the high-potential agricultural zone of Western Kenya, situated at the base of Mount Elgon. A multistage sampling procedure was employed to implement the survey in practice.

A multistage sampling procedure was used to implement the survey, beginning with the purposive selection of Bungoma County due to its prominence as the fourth-largest maize producer in Kenya and its diverse agro-ecological zones supporting a wide range of maize varieties. The seven sub-counties of Webuye East, Webuye West, Kanduyi, Kabuchai, Mt. Elgon, Tongaren, and Sirisia were further purposively chosen because maize covers approximately 93% of their cultivated land and they reflect disparities in ecological zones and maize-farming intensity. Wards were then selected randomly from each sub-county, and farm households were sampled through systematic random sampling where a random starting household was chosen, every two households were skipped, and every third household was interviewed. Primary data were collected through semi-structured questionnaires administered in Kiswahili or local dialect via face-to-face interviews. A total of 591 households participated after accounting for data cleaning. Ethical approval was obtained, and informed consent was secured from all participants.
