Description

The included datasets contain match-level (singles) observations from the 2024 Boys’ 16 & 18 USTA National Indoor Championships, the 2024 Boys’ 16 & 18 USTA National Winter Championships, and the 2024 ITA Men’s All-American Championships. The two boys' tournaments are stored in the Junior_Tennis.csv file, and the observations of the collegiate matches are stored in the College_Tennis.csv file. Columns included in the datasets contain player names (anonymized for the boys' matches), an indicator of the match outcome (equals 1 if Player 1 won, 0 if Player 1 lost, and RET if Player 1 had to retire from the match), and the two players' WTN (World Tennis Number) and UTR (Universal Tennis Rating) ratings going into the observed match. Whether a player appears as Player 1 or Player 2 in the observed match was the result of randomization. There are also columns (Player1Comp and Player2Comp) that have "inverted" the WTN ratings (subtracted them from 40) such that higher values are indicative of a better (stronger) rating. UTRs were collected from the UTR website (https://app.utrsports.net/home). WTNs were collected directly from the public draw sheets when available; otherwise, WTNs were collected from the WTN website (https://worldtennisnumber.com/eng/player-search/). Match results were collected from the public draw sheets available through the USTA (https://playtennis.usta.com/Competitions/xs-tennis-inc/Tournaments/) and ITA (https://colleges.wearecollegetennis.com/Competitions/ITA/Tournaments/) websites.
