Description

Website, phone, email and social media presence for 1,786,700 businesses across all 81 provinces of Turkey, broken down by province and sector, with every claimed website crawled to verify that it responds. 38.3% of businesses (684,496) have a website on record, but only 23.2% have one that answers: 413,777 sites responded and 270,719 did not. 95.3% carry a Facebook reference against 13.0% for Instagram, 6.9% for X, 6.3% for YouTube, 4.3% for LinkedIn and 0.78% for TikTok. 65.3% list a phone number, and 542,323 businesses have no website at all but do publish a phone number. Istanbul leads with 53.7% of businesses holding a website on record, Ankara follows at 47.7%; among provinces with at least 5,000 businesses, Giresun sits lowest at 21.6%. Steps to reproduce

1. Take the Overture Maps Foundation places dataset (CDLA-Permissive-2.0) and filter it to Turkey: 1,786,700 records. 2. Assign province and district geographically, from each record's coordinates against official boundaries. Overture's own address region field is null on roughly 92% of Turkish records, so it is not used. 3. Request every business website once. A record counts as reachable when the site returned a response; timeouts, refused connections and DNS failures count as unreachable. 4. Read social profiles from the markup of the reachable pages. The Instagram figure is therefore a floor rather than a census: a business with an Instagram account and no website cannot be counted. 5. Aggregate by province and by sector; sectors under 10,000 records are excluded from the sector ranking.
