Description

This dataset contains the aggregate election-level data and calculations used in the article “When Turnout and Winner Support Diverge: Presidential Elections in Mongolia, 1993-2021.” It covers Mongolia’s eight presidential first-round elections from 1993 to 2021 and separately documents the 2017 runoff as a within-election comparison. The dataset includes registered electorate, participating voters, votes received by the eventual winner, registered-electorate turnout, winner support among participating voters, electorate-wide winner support, candidate results, and decomposition calculations. Election counts are based on official results of the General Election Commission of Mongolia (GEC), while derived indicators and decomposition components are author calculations. The workbook also contains a data dictionary, source notes, and reproducibility checks.

Steps to reproduce

Open the Excel workbook and use the “Election-level data” sheet to reproduce the longitudinal indicators reported in the article. Turnout (T) is calculated as participating voters divided by the registered electorate; winner share (W) as the eventual winner’s first-round votes divided by participating voters; and electorate-wide winner support (B) as the eventual winner’s first-round votes divided by the registered electorate. The “Decomposition” sheet reproduces the accounting decomposition reported in the article, while the “2017 runoff” sheet contains the separate within-election comparison. The “Data dictionary” and “Notes and sources” sheets provide variable definitions and source information.
